Bootstrap Backyard Farmer

“You can’t just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood. What mood is that? Last-minute panic.”

– Bill Watterson

What Can I Say

COVID lockdown, pack for a move, COVID kind of lockdown, move, try to find my stuff, COVID maybe again and where is my stuff?

The past two years have been an interesting time for the Goad family. Like most of you, we have encountered many challenges. This has been compounded by the fact that we moved across the state. In addition to working remotely, I never seemed to have the time to find – let alone unpack my Hydroponic and Microgreen equipment.

You would think that with remote work and very much locked down, it would have been a great time to get my hands wet. That’s unfortunately has been a big fat NOPE! The move dampened my enthusiasm and energy. Especially when you have mountains of moving boxes stacked in multiple spaces.

One Small Step

A few months ago I came across one of my seed sprout kits with some old packets of seeds. Then there came that small spark of thought – what if? What if, these seeds were still good? What if, I took the time to try to take a stab at it? What if, I get off my duff and get my hands wet?

The sprouting begins

Surprise, surprise – they were “ALIVE!!!!!!”

Yummy good

And yummy, yummy, yummy goodness.

What NEXT?

What’s next you ask? Why of course, the old trusty AeroGarden. Now, where’s the box? Was it in the back bedroom or the garage? EUREKA! THERE IT IS!  I am just one seed kit away – thanks Amazon!!Areogarden

One Step For Humankind

Now – I am on a roll!!! As the months passed I begin to wonder what I could do with limited indoor spaces and whether winter seemed to want to give up? Why not a greenhouse? But a greenhouse costs a few grand – how about a temporary one to see if I am going to like it? Thanks to Tractor Supply I found the one I wanted and at a price that I was willing to pay. And after explaining to the neighbors that I wasn’t planning to pull an engine block or something similar, the temporary greenhouse was up. Side note: Check the weather before doing anything like this, the vinyl tarp makes a great kite.

So What Now?

See what trouble you can get into? Once you get the ball rolling and next thing you know you are trying to figure out what frame pipe goes where? Where are my chemicals, could they be in that stack? Got to get down to the local Ace to find that such-and-such… I know you’ve been there, done that. If you haven’t just wait you will….

The final product doesn’t look like much – just you wait. I AM BACK or at least until the next windstorm then it’s on to that engine block! Now, where did I put my……….

It begins again

  1. Thanks for expressing the joys of gardening. In spite of all the pressures we face in life setting a gaol that a personal enjoys and then acheiving it brings incredible positive energy. With that power, we have awesome potential, to accomplish the desires of the heart. The obstacle was moving and all those boxes and the work and the energy that would be required. This was negative energy, but by focusing your goals on gardening you started the flow of positive energy. This is way so many people enjoy gardening becasue it results in negative energy reduction and enhances positive energy flow!

  2. While the Covid-19 pandemic was going on we were all in doubt about what to do while we were indoors. Many lost their jobs and wanted to start their own businesses and many started gardening and vegetable growing. I have been dealing with flowers since I love it very much.

  3. It is so amazing how the pandemic has caused people to think outside of the box and start backyard farming. My wife and I have started backyard farming ourselves. I believe this is a great way to sustain ourselves and not to keep depending on others. The pandemic is not a good thing but at the same time, there is so much good that came out of this pandemic.

  4. Thank you for sharing your experience growing your garden in the midst of pandemic. It’s actually a great way of finding new things to love even if we’re at home. I’m interested in aerogarden though, does it work well under tropical weather? Thanks for answering. Best regards to your website.
